Choosing the most suitable pallet racking system can be a complex process, so it helps to know a few of the key features and benefits of each.

Wide Aisle

Allows for any layout, stores any pallet type and provides complete access to all pallets stored, the most popular type of pallet racking system

Narrow Aisle

A denser system with increased capacity storage, allows complete access to pallets, requires the use of a specialised forklift truck to fit down the aisles

Drive-in

Maximum storage capacity with more limited access to pallets stored, generally stores materials on the FILO principle as it requires the forklift truck to enter the racking itself

Mobile

High capacity system that is generally used to save space as it allows the use of a moving aisle/aisles for access to pallets

Pallet Flow

High capacity system used for limited range of stock with high turnover, gives limited access to pallets and uses the FIFO principle to allow effortless stock rotation

Pallet Shuttle

Automated system that provides high capacity storage similar to Drive-in without the need of the forklift truck to enter the racking

Pull-Out Unit

Allows increased access to pallets stored while also providing denser storage for increased capacity

Push-Back

High capacity system with limited access to pallets stored, used for bulk storage of goods on the FILO principle

Tips on Ensuring a Long-life Racking System

Making sure you get the most use out of your racking system for as long a time as possible saves your business both the time and money of having a new one installed.  The methods involved in protecting your racking system can also help improve the safety of your workforce and prevent pallet racking collapses or accidents.

  • The bottom of a racking system is generally the most damaged. This damage can be reduced and prevented by fixing column guards and end rails to the system for extra protection
  • Forklift truck collisions are one of the main causes of damage to racking systems. To help prevent these you could implement a traffic system in your facility including introducing a speed limit and designated forklift truck paths.  Bollards near racking corners can also help to stop forklift truck drivers taking corners too fast or close
  • Much of the damage done to racking can be fixed by the reinforcement or replacement of damaged parts – the earlier the better. Regular rack inspections from a qualified and accredited inspector like CSI can help you to identify any potential problems with your system.

Key Terms Explained

FIFO and FILO:

FIFO and FILO, or First-in, First-out and First-in, Last-out, are terms that apply to pallet racking systems that give limited access to pallets stored within the systems.  FIFO means pallets loaded to the system first will be able to be picked/accessed first.  FILO means pallets loaded to the system first will be able to be picked/accessed last (i.e. only after the other subsequently loaded pallets are picked/unloaded).
