Waste Management Legislation – What You Need to Know
The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 (which took effect on January 1st 2014) require businesses to present their waste for collection in a manner that dry recyclable waste is kept separate from other waste and that each type of dry recyclable waste is kept separate from others. Businesses should segregate their waste in terms of paper (cardboard included), plastics, metals and glass. There is a further regulation that requires businesses producing over 50kg of food waste per week to keep this separate as well (i.e. canteens, restaurants and pubs or bars that serve food in sufficient quantities to qualify).
The Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 (which take effect on January 1st 2015) Sections 13 and 14, require businesses that produce paper, plastic, metal or glass waste to ensure the separate collection of this waste.
To discourage the sending of waste to landfill sites, the Landfill Tax has steadily risen in the UK for the past 20 years. The current rate for active waste is £86.10 per tonne, while for non-active waste (e.g. rocks or soil) it is £2.70 per tonne – so having a comprehensive recycling plan not only helps your business comply with relevant legislation, but has huge economical benefits!
